The Friends are looking for super awesome volunteers to work very late shifts for the Ragnar Relay Race with us from 9:30pm on Friday May 8th until 4:30AM on Saturday morning.
We know this is a ridiculous time to ask for volunteers but the race helps us raise money for Friends projects to benefit Myles Standish State Forest. Last year, we raised $750 for the Friends.
Anyone volunteering this year for at least 4 hours will get a free ticket to our Annual Meeting and Dinner on May 20th!
We will be operating a relay race runner exchange station for hundreds of relay teams running the 200 mile Ragnar Relay Race from Duxbury Beach up to Hingham and back down to the Cape out to Dennis. (More info- ( https://www.ragnarrelay.com/race/capecod ) The volunteer job is not difficult- announcing arrivals, recording times, keeping the exchange and parking lot under control, keeping the refreshment area stocked and clean and so on. Last year, we enjoyed chili and cornbread from the Little Red Smokehouse to keep us going. This year, I’m open to suggestions. We must have excellent snacks to keep us going.
The exchange will be at the Equestrian parking lot again this year. The Equestrian lot entrance is off Lower College Pond Road near the stop sign where Lower College Pond Road meets Halfway Pond Road.
All volunteers must pre-register with Ragnar online in addition to signing up here. We will let you know when the link to sign up is available.
WHAT TO WEAR AND WHAT TO BRING
-Your cheering voice and a positive attitude.
-Comfy, weather-appropriate clothes.
-A headlamp for night shifts. Ragnar will provide safety vests.
-Sunglasses will not be necessary; neither will sunscreen;bug spray might be umbrella—depending on the location.
-A book or folding chair (some shifts have downtime).
-Food and water. (The Friends will provide snacks, coffee and water. Let us know your suggestions.)
-A cowbell or noise maker. (Optional, but awesome.)
-Bonus points for wearing a cape, grass skirt, glow stick necklace, funny shirt, Iron Man mask, or whatever you can come up with.
In return for the Friends’ help, Ragnar will make a very substantial contribution to the Friends, which will help offset the costs of some of the programs we run in Myles Standish State Forest during the year. (The Friends is a 501(c)3 charity and last year we did receive a $750 contribution for our efforts.)
In 2018, we spent more than $3400 rebuilding two boardwalk bridges along the East Head Reservoir trail and we are in the planning for another major project to benefit the State Forest (a pavilion at the amphitheater).
Please sign up and help the Friends help the park we love. Thanks!
